The Split: Australian Labor in the Fifties

Murray, Robert

ISBN: 0868061425 9780868061429

Three decades later it still arouses passion and division as its repercussions continue to bedevil the Labor Party and union movement. The Split, widely considered to be the best account of these momentous events, draws on 'inside information' and extensive interviews with participants, many of whom are now dead, to reveal the complex series of events, the intrigues, the dedication and wheeler dealing behind the breakdown. Fly a Rebel Flag: Bill Morrow 1888-1980

Johnson, Audrey

Ringwood Victoria Australia; Penguin Books Australia; 1986
ISBN: 0140077081 9780140077087

Book Condition: Very Good. Paper Back. Size D: 7"-8" Tall (177-203mm). These books were purchased new and have been in storage for decades. However there is light shelf wear on the cover and minor tanning along the edges of the book. Several copies are available. This fascinating biography of labor and trade union leftist Bill Morrow, the long time secretary of the Railways Union in Tasmania, later a Labor Senator, is of great political significance for the following reason. This book, published by Penguin in 1986, also describes the political and industrial activity of Morrow's chief supporter and fellow leftist, Alec Campbell, several times the President of the Australian Railways Union in Tasmania, and also President of the Launceston Trades & Labor Council. The militant activities of Alec Campbell are listed in the index of the book on pages 127, 128, 131, 134, 139, 143, 144, 145-6. As we now know, by accident of circumstance and longevity, Alec Campbell lived long enough to vote YES in the Republic Referendum. When he died in 2003, he was the last surviving Gallipoli veteran. Like Simpson, that other Gallipoli soldier (the man with the donkey), Alec Campbell was a socialist and a working class militant. In his mature political life, Campbell campaigned vigorously for peace and against war. As part of the warm human celebration of his life and times, it's worth reading the Bill Morrow biography in which Alec Campbell is one of the important "bit players" of labor movement history. The press made passing mention of Alec Campbell's trade union activities, but they did their best to ignore the core radical content of his adult life. (Coincidentally, the book's author, Labor movement historian and activist, Audrey Johnson, also died in the same year, 2003.) 328 pages. Inventory #147815
